Games for Teaching Children Spanish
I wanted to share some fun games that you can play with your children while at the same time giving them Spanish lessons in an easy to learn format. Here are some fun, playful activities that you can do to easily teach your child Spanish. Buena suerte!
- Tamal Caliente: this is just your standard water balloon toss. However you pretend that it is 'muy caliente' and kids have to 'tira rapidamente'. When it breaks, encourage children to
ask for another' quiero otro por favor'. We use beach towels and toss 'el tamal caliente' to each other.
- ¿Qué hora es elefante? We just happen to have play elefante ears for this game (you can change it to any animal you choose). It is the standard game of "What time is it Mr.
Fox?” Kids have to ask ' ¿qué hora es? the child who is elefante has to give answer ' son las tres' and kids take tres pasos. When elefante says ' medianoche', kids turn and run back to starting line.
- Estoy pensando en...: This is a great game to play in the car on road trips. You have probably played " I am thinking of a person, place, or thing'. For those kids with limited Spanish, play the game in English, but use as much Spanish vocabulary as you can. For those kids with more language skills, this is a great game for fluency practice. My kids love this game, as we ask many questions to help illicit clues and vocabulary hints.
